INNO-CULT: Digitization of Cultural Heritage as a Tool for Sustainable Development and Social Inclusion
Synopsis
Objectives: This paper examines the role of digital transformation in ensuring sustainable development of cultural heritage amidst global challenges such as climate change, demographic shifts and social inequality. The study aims to demonstrate how the INNO-CULT project integrates advanced digital tools to enhance the conservation, mediation and promotion of cultural resources, contributing to the implementation of the Council of Europe’s Strategy 21. Prior work: The research builds on contemporary discussions on digitalisation of cultural heritage, participatory cultural ecosystems and sustainable territorial development, particularly drawing from recent studies published in SCRD addressing interoperable platforms, community engagement and the use of immersive technologies for cultural preservation. Approach: The study employs a mixed methodological framework combining analysis of digital platform design, case-based observations of regional heritage initiatives and evaluation of participatory formats such as digital laboratories, seminars and innovative events. Special attention is paid to multilingual accessibility, open data principles and the integration of AR, 3D visualization and automated text processing. Results: The findings demonstrate that the creation of a sustainable, interoperable digital platform significantly enhances access to cultural artefacts and educational resources, stimulates community participation and supports the formation of cultural and tourist routes. These outcomes contribute to the development of resilient regional cultural ecosystems and promote social inclusion by strengthening cultural identity and accessibility for diverse audiences. Implications: The study offers insights for researchers, policymakers and cultural practitioners seeking to implement digital heritage strategies that reinforce sustainability, openness and transnational cooperation. Value: The paper’s contribution lies in presenting a comprehensive model of digital transformation of cultural heritage that not only advances technological innovation but also addresses broader socio-economic objectives, offering a replicable framework aligned with European cultural policy priorities.
